The Majestic Oasis Apartments are perfectly situated with views of the Upper Spencer Gulf and within walking distance to the centre of Port Augusta’s main shopping district. Directly out the front of the Majestic Oasis Apartments is the Port Augusta foreshore. It is well equipped with excellent BBQ facilities and a modern playground suitable for all ages. There are walking tracks that can take you along the southern shores of the Gulf, with swimming pontoons, a shower for beachgoers and a basketball and netball half-court.
Although Port Augusta is known as the town at the gateway to the outback, and provides great access to the Flinders Ranges, the town itself and immediate surrounding area have many attractions worth visiting.
A visit to Wadlata Outback Centre (41 Flinders Terrace) and it’s “Tunnel of Time” is essential when visiting Port Augusta. With hands on experiences to show the history and culture of the area, you could spend 10 minutes or a few hours wandering through the multi award-winning attraction. You will also find the Port Augusta Visitor Centre in the same building, so it’s worth the stop to get information and maps on the surrounding area. The Visitor Centre is open Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm and Saturday and Sunday 10am to 4pm.
You might also like to visit Curdnatta Art Gallery (105 Commercial Road), which is run by local volunteer artists who produce high-quality paintings, pottery, crafts and fabric art. Or if you are interested in war memorabilia, visit the RSL Military Memorabilia Museum (15 Fulham Road) to get an up close and personal view of a Leopard Tank and many more important war artefacts. At All Saints Church Hill on Highway One, the Mural on the Hill, is a made from 2,500 handmade and painted tiles and depicts the story of Port Augusta from the Aboriginal Dreaming to European settlement to the present day.
The Australian Arid Lands Botanic Garden is a huge 250 hectares and has about 12km of walking tracks. It is located 1.4 km from the start of the Stuart Highway heading towards the Northern Territory and is a great way to see an array of arid native plants, as well as native birds. You can even take home some tips about what will grow in your garden, or enjoy a snack at the Bluebush Café.
There are many lookouts and parks that have great views and provide a place to relax or have a picnic.
The view from the top of the Water Tower Lookout on Mitchell Terrace offers excellent 360 degree views of Port Augusta overlooking the Flinders Ranges, Spencer Gulf and the Outback. There are a large number of self-drive or hosted tours that will allow you to see the best that the Flinders Ranges and Outback have to offer.
